How to gain research experience? (bs-ms student at iiser-p)

qualifications: 1st year bs-ms student at IISER-P (completed first semester) current cgpa : >= 9 (can maintain it throughout my degree)

Im a student in IISERP (first year). I want to know how I can gain some experience. Is it possible to join some lab to learn in 2nd year? (Planning to major in biology). I know a few professors from iiser-p whose work Im interested in and i also know i can go for internships during summer and winter breaks after 2nd year but is there something more i can do apart from internships and semester projects? I kind of want to learn different basic procedures that are done in labs.
