Is it recommend to put a dryer on top of a washing machine?

Someone gave us a dryer and we put it on top of our washing machine. That washing machine broke recently and had to get a new one. We had that machine machine for years. So im assuming that our washing machine broke cuz of that. Is it recommend to put dryers on top of washine machine?
