Generations should be by decade and further split
It is hard to accept for some that someone born in 1997 could be in the same generation as someone born potentially after the 2012 olympics.
Measuring generations by decade is way simpler, cleaner and allows for more accurate divides.
Let’s say anyone born between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2009 is apart of ‘Generation 2000’. Yes there is still significant gap, albeit a third smaller, they share way more in common with each other than two people born in different millenniums.
We can then go further: 2000-2004 kids were all teenagers pre 2020 and had significant moments of their childhood in both the 2000s and 2010s. For 2005-2009, their childhood was almost mainly in the 2010s, and they wete becoming teenagers just as the decade came to a close.
Who remembers the year 2012? The year when many considered 2000s culture to have finally died. 2008 and 2009 kids probably very very very vaguely remember it, the rest probably have some consistent memories. We can then classify them two years as overlapping with ‘Generation 2010’.
The actual boundaries of years can be way more fluid than people think. Obviously, some things will always be true (2004-2006 is a mid 2000s year). But the you could say, actually, kids born in 2005 probably have more similar experiences to a 2007 born than 2003 born.
