King Thror is one of the most significant Dwarf rulers in Tolkien’s Middle-earth history. His reign over Erebor (the Lonely Mountain) is remembered as a time of both great prosperity and tragic downfall.

1. The Golden Age of Erebor

In the early years of Thror’s rule, Erebor flourished:

The kingdom expanded within the mountain,

Dwarven craftsmanship reached its peak,

Trade with neighboring realms grew.

Thror was known as a proud and tradition-bound king.

2. The Arkenstone and Rising Pride

The symbol of Thror’s reign was the Arkenstone, also called the Heart of the Mountain.

It was:

Considered sacred by the Dwarves,

The centerpiece of Thror’s pride and authority.

Over time, this pride turned into arrogance, influencing his decisions.

3. The Smaug Catastrophe

The defining event of Thror’s era was Smaug’s attack on Erebor.

The dragon:

Learned of Erebor’s wealth,

Assaulted the Lonely Mountain,

Drove the Dwarves into exile,

Claimed the kingdom and its treasures.

This was one of the greatest tragedies in Dwarven history.

4. Years of Exile and Decline

After the fall of Erebor, Thror and his people wandered as refugees through Dunland and the Ered Luin region.

Losing his kingdom took a heavy toll on Thror, and he gradually fell into despair.

5. The Final Journey to Khazad-dûm

Seeking to reclaim his honor, Thror made a fateful decision to enter Khazad-dûm (Moria) alone.

There he was killed by the Orc-chieftain Azog, an act that ignited the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, a massive conflict across Middle-earth.

In Summary

King Thror’s era follows a dramatic arc:

Great prosperity → Devastation → Exile → Tragic end

In Tolkien’s legendarium, Thror is remembered as a ruler who lost his kingdom to greed and pride, yet whose legacy inspired his people to fight for their honor.
