New York or Washington DC for 4th of July?

Good day,

I will be visiting the United States for 1-2 weeks starting on 2 or 3 July. I’m from New Zealand and will be arriving from Canada before flying into the U.S.

As I’ll be travelling solo, which city would you recommend as the best place to spend the 4th of July?

I’ll likely be spending the majority of my stay in New York. What are some good day trips from NYC, and do you think it’s worth visiting other cities (such as Washington, DC), or would it be better to just stay in New York?
