I Thought I Needed “More Traffic”… Turns Out I Just Needed Authority
For months I kept telling myself, “we need more traffic.”
I rewrote landing pages, tested new CTAs, tweaked pricing — nothing moved.
Eventually I realized the problem wasn’t traffic at all.
It was authority.
When I audited my domain, the picture was pretty clear:
good product, solid content — but almost no backlinks. From Google’s perspective, the site barely existed.
I think a lot of early-stage SaaS founders underestimate how empty their backlink profile really is.
You launch, link your site on Twitter and LinkedIn, maybe get a couple of mentions… and that’s it.
Search engines don’t rank effort. They rank proof.
What finally made things move wasn’t another headline tweak — it was focusing on structured, trusted mentions:
- SaaS & product directories
- Industry lists
- Local and niche citations
- Consistent brand/entity presence across the web
Not spammy link farms. Just boring, unsexy, foundational stuff that tells Google: this is a real business.
If you’re stuck in that “nothing is moving” phase, it might not be your landing page or pricing.
It might simply be that Google still has no external proof you exist.
Curious how others here approached backlinks in the early days — manually, PR, directories, or something else?
