A Little Misunderstanding on the Plate

This morning, when I was having breakfast at a well-known hotel, a small misunderstanding took place.

After finishing a plate of vegetable salad, I fetched a plate of sushi and casually placed it next to the empty plate I’d just used, then turned to get a drink. But when I came back just a moment later, everything on the table was gone—the untouched plate of sushi had disappeared along with the empty dish.

I called a waitress over to inquire about it. She looked flustered and explained, “The supervisor was pressing me to clear the tables quickly. I saw the empty plate and thought you’d finished eating, so I took everything away.” I couldn’t help raising my voice a little, pointing to where the sushi had been: “That plate of sushi was completely clean! It was obviously just served, untouched at all!”

Hardly had I finished speaking when the supervisor strode over. After hearing what had happened, she apologized profusely and offered to send a plate of fruit to my room as compensation. I said frankly, “There’s no need. What matters is that your team should strengthen awareness of food conservation during your daily meetings. When clearing the tables, the waitstaff should also be more observant. You can’t just mindlessly clear and throw things away just because you’re following your supervisor’s orders—it’s such a shame to waste food!”

Later, I reflected on the incident myself: if I had placed the sushi a little further away from the empty plate, or if I had simply said a word to the waitress nearby, could I have avoided this misunderstanding and prevented the food from being wasted?
