I went to Highbury One Time
So I’ve been a fan of the gunners for basically my whole life and I have been lucky enough to see the Arsenal play when they were still at Highbury (Aussie fan so watching them play live is a privilege). I was 13 and we were travelling in Europe and my old man secured tickets off some scalpers.
What was funny was that we took our seats and one of the stewards questioned what we were doing there and that we were in someone’s else’s seats. I’ll never forget one of the stewards saying to us ‘basically you’ve been had’ cause we were sold fake tickets that somehow got us into the ground. They found us somewhere to sit anyway (thank god) and it’s one of the greatest sporting experiences I’ve ever had and I’ve been to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
What was notable was this game was vs Newcastle and we won 5 nil and Ray Parlour scored a hatrick. It felt like we were there for something special. Even though we were tourists it was really easy to pick up the chants… there’s only one Dennis Bergkamp … so I don’t buy that tourists don’t bring the noise when they are at a home game, especially if they are a fan. Never would have expected that the team I saw on the pitch was only a couple of years away from going undefeated in a season.
Anyway my point is that I’ve never been to the emirates but I’m keen to hear whether anyone remembers that game and whether the Emirates is creating the same vibe that I felt when I saw the gunners in that game 2000 Highbury, it was electric COYG ‘Ooh ah Ray Parlour’
