One way to fix the slow uptake of Electric Vehicles (EV) in Nigeria.
The first thing that comes to mind when most think of EVs in Nigeria is with where is the power. With a National grid that collapses once a month, must turn to self funded energy solutions for 24/7 electricity. This is expensive and unsustainable.
How many EV charging stations can an individual build? While agencies like REA rural electricifican area work on installation of solar panels part of a micro grid it's not enough. They should create schemes to electricify transportation as it's an area forgotten by most government but crucial to growth.
Here are some factors to consider for EVs to take off in Nigeria.
Funding (Government and Private)
Infrastructure
Policy and Legislation
Deliverables
Scaling
Audience
Infrastructure
I propose working with Private and GRA estates to create the infrastructure for charging stations. By working with gated estates we cut down on some security challenges and reduce spending.
A private public collaboration that shares profits from charging stations encourages participation of estates and government.
Funding
This depends on risk appetite and industry stakeholders. There are African and Asian countries creating EVs , an agreement can be reached to provide vehicles at discounted prices to be paid off by car owners/participants.
The core audience
Civil servants, Landlords, transport unions are all stakeholders who benefit from EVs.
(Commercial)
Estate bus shuttles,
Commercial passenger carriers (within an agreed area),
Hospital ambulance and emergency services
(Private)
Cars
Micro/Mini Grids
Creating micro grids accross town is a scalable and adaptable way for electricifican of rural and urban areas. We start small and work upwards , before getting to the federal government let's work with state and local governments.
Nigeria has an abundance of renewable energy waiting to be tapped. The adoption of renewable electricity provides an enabling environment for EVs to strive which brings economic growth, upskillling, jobs and stability.
