Portugese advice on name Barrett
My sister is expecting a little girl in 6 months, only her husband (we dont like him) is insistent that the name be a traditional name that can be easily translated into Portugese and back into English because his grandmother can only speak Portugese.
However, we've come to an issue. Every time my sister suggests a name, she suggests it and he tells her he name has a horrible, negative meaning in portugese. Scarlett means the failure of the family, Vivienne meanings mudpie and brown and fecal matter, Ella means death and destruction. These are just some examples.
However, she loves the name Barrett and when she suggested it this time, he says "Barrett means to betray your family". My sister will not look any of this up herself, insists he knows Portugese and why would he lie.
Any Portugese speakers here that would know what the name Barrett means? Ive done some of my own googling but I only see the translation to Barretto, a hat or a cap. Is this correct?
