What should a new player know before starting on an RP server?

Thinking about maybe starting on Meriadoc, but I know that MMO RP communities can be peculiar. So what are the specific quirks when it comes to LOTRO? Are you expected to stay IC all the time? Know all the lore inside and out? Do people even talk with random people or is it all confined to guilds?
