What is this obsession with Indian mothers with “evil eyes”

My mom is a huge believer of evil eyes and is kind of obsessed with it. She won’t even allow me to talk about my exams with my relatives.

Recently I had told one of my relatives about my upcoming exams and this relative went and told my other relative about it. It’s literally just the fact that I had an exam on a particular month, that’s all.

But it became a huge problem in my family and had to listen to a huge lecture about it. Mind you I came home to study for this said exam. She told me about how I just don’t understand how bad is evil eye and I get it, I get the whole don’t share your Achievements/plans to others or it’ll fail thing but literally how am I supposed to lie to their (relative) face?

This is one of the many instances. Are all indian parents this careful about Evil eyes?
