Spousal benefits social security for non-US spouse
My wife is American, I'm German and we live in Germany together. She is employed by a US employer as local staff and pays into SS and Medicare, on top of her contributions to the local benefits system (so she pays an insane amount of money into public Healthcare and pension schemes). She will therefore be entitled to SS when she retires (though Medicare will be useless to us since it does not work in Germany where we also pay for local health insurance).
We just learned that as her spouse I may be eligible for up to 50% of her benefits. Considering that I do not pay into US SS at all (I am employed in Germany and a German citizen so I pay into the German pension scheme instead) and therefore cannot claim SS myself, does that mean I am entitled to this even if I receive a pension in Germany? Sounds too good to be true?
