I (27M) love my girlfriend (25F) deeply, but the silence is destroying me. Am I asking too much?
Hey everyone,
I’m posting anonymously because I really need some outside perspective and I don’t want to dump this on people in my life anymore.
I (late 20s, M) have been in a long-distance relationship for a few months with someone I genuinely love more deeply than I ever have before. We haven’t met in person yet due to circumstances, but the emotional connection is very real on both sides — we’ve said “I love you”, talked about a future, family, etc.
A few weeks ago, everything changed.
My girlfriend became extremely unwell and ended up in and out of hospital for weeks. Serious stuff — organ issues, intense pain, mental health strain, the whole lot. I was there for her constantly during that time: checking in, supporting her, reassuring her, holding space when she broke down. I don’t regret that at all — I love her and I wanted to be there.
Since she’s been discharged, though, communication has become very inconsistent.
We’ll have really deep, loving conversations, she’ll tell me how much she loves me, promise we’ll talk more… and then she’ll go completely quiet for long stretches. Hours. Sometimes most of a day. Sometimes longer. Then she comes back apologising, feeling like a terrible girlfriend, saying she feels guilty, that she’s exhausted, that she loves me.
I believe her. I really do.
But the whiplash is killing me.
I recently realised (through a lot of reading and reflection) that I have an anxious-preoccupied attachment style, likely rooted in an emotionally inconsistent past relationship I thought I’d healed from. Being back in a relationship — especially long-distance, especially with someone unwell — has brought all that back up hard.
When things go quiet, my nervous system goes into overdrive. I spiral. I feel invisible, abandoned, unlovable — even though logically I know she’s sick, overwhelmed, and not doing this intentionally.
I’ve tried to communicate this gently and responsibly. I’ve told her:
• I don’t expect constant messaging
• I don’t want to pressure her
• I understand she needs rest
• even small check-ins help me regulate
She responded kindly and said she understands, loves me, and will try. But the pattern keeps repeating.
What’s breaking me is this:
I feel like I’m showing up fully, and I’m not getting enough back to feel emotionally safe — yet I also feel awful for even needing more when she’s struggling so much.
I don’t want to be unfair.
I don’t want to abandon someone I love when they’re sick.
But I also feel like I’m slowly burning out, growing resentful, and losing pieces of myself trying to cope with the silence.
So I guess my questions are:
• Am I asking too much given the circumstances?
• How do you balance your own emotional needs with a partner’s serious illness?
• At what point does “being understanding” turn into self-abandonment?
• If you’ve been the anxious partner — how did you survive long-distance without losing your mind?
I’m not looking for “just break up” replies unless that’s genuinely the consensus. I love her. I just don’t know how to keep doing this without hurting myself.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far.
TL;DR:
I (28M) am in a long-distance relationship with my girlfriend (25F) who has been seriously ill and recently hospitalised. I love her deeply and want to support her, but long stretches of silence and inconsistent communication have been triggering anxiety and emotional distress for me. I’ve realised I have an anxious-preoccupied attachment style and I’m trying to manage it without blaming her. I’m struggling to balance being patient and supportive while also needing more consistency and reassurance, and I’m unsure how to navigate this without hurting either of us.
