AWD is More Fun Than RWD?
Back in the day, a fun sporty car needed to be RWD for all kind of handling reasons I hope I don't need to explain. And back in the day with very few exceptions AWD wasn't nearly as much fun. The AWD systems were rudimentary, not designed for sporty driving, handled badly at the edge, and having enough power to overpower the traction was quite difficult.
This isn't the case anymore though. We now have more options for AWD cars with systems designed for sporty enthusiastic driving and enough power to spin them. And now with our more common higher power levels the RWD option is lame as with less traction they have a much harder time using all the available power.
I'd equate the modern RWD to AWD difference as being much like the difference between an open differential and limited slip differential during the 60s muscle car era. Back then it was the difference between spinning one or two. Now it's the difference between spinning two or four.
