defective item (purchase already completed)

I purchased a pc part (motherbaord). While I was waiting for the rest of my PC parts, I had to finalize the purchase (wasn't able to test the motherboard without the rest of the parts). I just found out the item was defective.

The sale was finalized and I understand I can't return the item anymore, but i still have the option of buying 'CPS - 2 year protection plan' for 12 dollars.

Can I purchase the protection plan and ask to have the item repaired? At this point, I am assuming I got scammed and there is little I can do....
