The Humor of Old Remedies
Old remedies have this hilarious charm that refuses to die. Somewhere in history, someone decided that rubbing onion slices on your feet would cure anything from a cold to heartbreak, and entire villages nodded in agreement.
Still, buried under the nonsense, there was usually a tiny grain of logic. People used herbs that actually had calming effects. They brewed teas that soothed digestion long before anyone used words like “polyphenols” or “anti-inflammatory.” Their methods were chaotic, but their instincts weren’t always wrong.
It’s comforting to look back at these odd traditions. Even the wildest ones remind us that humans have always been trying to heal themselves with whatever they had. And today, while we’re thankfully not applying crushed garlic to our hair as a “spirit purifier,” we still carry the same impulse: find relief, find warmth, find something that feels like care.
