Time to stop letting the past live on and grow in our minds! Must read!
I have come to learn that when we continue allowing past trauma or negative feelings to manifest in our brain and paint ourselves as victims, we are actually helping that pathway to grow in our brain and this achieves the opposite of healing. The goal should be to accept that we were wronged by our parent/s and then focus on staying positive and growing as a person. The more we focus on the traumatic experiences, the more our brain is moulded around that frame of thought and this leads to a victim mentality and feeling as though we are permanently damaged, in fact, the harmful effects of past trauma can in some cases be made worse!
The best way to process a traumatic past is to:
By all means, do what is necessary to understand what the problem was and who was in the wrong in order to free yourself from any doubt or guilt, but once this is finally achieved, (and this can sometimes take a long time for us to accept), we must then come to terms with the fact that what happened cannot be undone and that we must free ourselves from the bondage of our traumatic upbringing by not letting it live on in our mind and continue to hurt or limit us long term despite it being far behind us.
A good principle to follow is “fake it until you make it”, sure we are going to find basic things in life difficult as a result of our upbringing which limited our growth in these areas, but it just takes time, and we just have to challenge ourselves until it becomes second nature. Rome wasn’t built in a day! You don’t become an athlete after your first day at the gym, but that doesn’t mean you give up, it takes time… fake it until you make it!
