Starting Pokémon TCG (casual at home), does this setup make sense?

New Player Advice

TLDR: want to play some pokemon at home with friends/family, are some battle decks a good start? Any extra tips?

Hi all,

We’re starting Pokémon TCG as part of a broader (board) game collection, and I wanted to get some advice before we go any further.

For context: we already play a lot of games at home. Things like Game of Thrones, Mistborn, Halli Galli, SET, Secret Hitler, and others. We wanted to add some Pokémon flavor to the mix: something casual, replayable, and fun to pull out on game nights.

This is what we’ve picked up / ordered so far:

Decks

  • Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex League Battle Deck
  • Miraidon ex League Battle Deck
  • Mega Gengar ex Mega Battle Deck
  • Mega Diancie ex Mega Battle Deck

Support & accessories

  • Trainer’s Toolkit (1 copy)
  • Sleeves for all decks
  • Toploaders for promos/favorites, that's more for me. We are going to Japan next year and I might try to get some souvenirs. Not for investing.
  • 2 playmats (one per player)

How we’re thinking about it

  • League decks for more 'structured' games
  • Mega decks because they look cool...
  • Toolkit for light tweaking if needed, I enjoy that.

We’re not planning to go deep into competitive play or buy tons of new stuff unless we really get obsessed (which… does sometimes happen).

A bit of background:

  • I was really into Pokémon growing up (up through Ruby, and played some of the later games too).
  • She’s never really been into Pokémon, but thought Diancie was cute and I’ve always liked Gengar, so that’s why those are in the mix.
  • We have friends and family we play a lot of (board) games with. So we thought it could be fun to add something a bit different to our games.

Questions

  1. Does this make sense as a casual, replayable Pokémon setup alongside other board games?
  2. Anything obvious we’re missing for smooth at-home play?
  3. Any beginner-friendly house rules you’d recommend to keep games fun and balanced?
  4. If we were to add one thing later (and only one), what would you suggest?

Cheers, and thanks in advance for any advice! :)
