Why Suriya-Nayanthara Is One of Kollywood’s Most Underrated Pairings
This is probably an opinion that only lands if you like or at least respect both Suriya and Nayanthara. If you already have a bias against either of them (especially Nayanthara), you’ll likely disagree or brush this off, and that’s fine. But putting that aside, I really think this pairing is underrated.
They’ve technically worked together in three films:
- Ghajini (2005) – not a pairing, so it doesn’t really count
- Aadhavan (2009) – limited screen time together
- Masss (2015) – again, minimal interaction and no strong romantic focus
So while the number sounds decent, the reality is that their dynamic was never properly explored. None of these films were written to center their relationship or build a romance, which is why the pairing never became memorable in a mainstream way.
I recently rewatched Aadhavan, and it reminded me how much I enjoyed the few scenes they shared. Shortly after, I came across an edit of Suriya and Nayanthara (as shown in the video below), and that honestly reinforced the feeling even more. Seeing those moments back-to-back made it clear that the chemistry was there. It just wasn’t given enough space in the actual films.
What stands out is how natural and comfortable their interactions feel, especially in Aadhavan. They complement each other well and look genuinely cute together without needing exaggerated romance or dramatic moments. It’s subtle chemistry, the kind that grows on you when you pay attention.
Because they never had a romance-heavy film or iconic scenes together, they’re almost never brought up when people discuss the best onscreen pairs in Kollywood. That’s not really on the fans or the media; the material just wasn’t there. But the potential was absolutely.
It feels like a missed opportunity. With the right script and proper utilization, Suriya and Nayanthara could’ve been remembered as a much stronger pairing. Even now, seeing them together again in a well-written film feels like something that could genuinely surprise people.
