How Content Creators Saved AoE2… and Also Changed It -AOE2 DE
Content creators are the reason AoE2 is still alive. They built the community, made the game accessible, and turned obscure mechanics into shared knowledge. Without them, the game might have died long ago.
At the same time, by breaking down every strategy and broadcasting it, they turned the game into a kind of checklist. High-level play is now largely about execution—clicking villagers, producing units, hitting timings—while improvisation and bluffing are risky and often punished. The moments where strategy feels meaningful are rare, and the individuality of each player is harder to see.
Ideally the game will grow while giving more creators opportunities and expanding the community—while still preserving what once made AoE2 feel alive: the uncertainty, discovery, and meaningful interaction that made every match feel like a test of instincts and wits.
I’m grateful for everything creators have done and will continue to support them. I just wish there was a way for AoE2 to bring back that sense of unpredictability, where each match can genuinely surprise both players and the audience.
