Professional Doctorate vs PhD
I am currently working full time in data science and statistics while studying a Master of Data Science at the University of New England in Australia. I have been thinking about what comes next and I am considering the idea of doing a doctorate alongside full time work, but I am unsure whether a Professional Doctorate or a PhD makes more sense.
I do not plan to go into academia. I see myself staying in industry, mainly in the health and government analytics space. I am interested in a doctorate partly for the experience, partly because I enjoy padding up my resume a bit, and yes, I would like to eventually leverage it for better career opportunities and hopefully better pay as well, even though I know nothing is guaranteed.
My biggest question is around the Professional Doctorate. A lot of what I read suggests it needs workplace backing and is closely connected to your professional role. That makes me wonder how tied you actually are to your employer over several years and what happens if you change roles or organisations while you are still studying. At the same time, a PhD feels more academic and theory focused, which is not really the direction I am heading in long term.
If anyone here has done a Professional Doctorate or a PhD while working, especially in analytics, data science, statistics, health, government or related areas, I would really appreciate hearing your experiences. Why did you choose the path you did? Was it worthwhile for your career? Did it help in terms of opportunities or salary? And for those who did a Professional Doctorate, how dependent was it on your workplace in reality if your job changed over time? I am mostly just curious about experiences!
