Can it run Doom?
For Christmas, I got a Minitoo Divoom. It's a Bluetooth speaker, clock, alarm, weather center, and has a pretty decent display for such a small gadget. It has some retro looking displays, such as DOS or Windows 95. It even has a folder for some games granted they're not very exciting. The whole retro pc style vibe I was getting really drove me to one of life's greatest questions: Can it run Doom?
I do not know much about this little gadget, or making a port of Doom, but the real question, is it possible? I would imagine somehow you'd need to get access to the hardware possibly by flashing custom firmware. Divoom products are closed source, but I wonder if there is an API to build off of (Doing some research, I found this Reddit post). Then you would need to make a doom port specific for the Divoom. The Minitoo has 6 buttons on it and a little joystick. Could that be enough for input mapping the doom port? It would be more enjoyable to play on an actual keyboard/mouse combination.
Ultimately, this whole post is all speculation. Is it possible? What would it take to make this happen? Granted, it would probably be easier to get an ESP32, 3D print the casing for it, stitch it together and it works(?). I did find this video of an ESP32 running Doom. Let me know what you guys think. I think it would be really neat to have the Doom community make yet another port for our beloved game.
Thank you for reading and keep ripping and tearing!
