Horses in (old) movies

My husband sometimes gets a hankering for old westerns (even though he “hates” old movies lol) and he’s just put on Fistfull of Dollars. Is it just me or are the horses in these old movies so skinny??!! There are obviously a lot of other welfare concerns with old westerns and their use of horses, but for some reason the way they look has surprised me. I guess I’m used to new movies where the horses (while often not accurate for the jobs or breeds they are alleged to be) are generally in great shape and truly stunning and valuable animals (and treated as precious assets, perhaps sometimes to a fault). We’ve come so far, and thank goodness for that! (Though I’m sure we could still do better)

Just a random thought I had tonight!
