Do I keep or return my Canon g7x mark3?
(1) Budget, country, and currency:
United States. Purchased Canon G7X Mark III at retail price as a Christmas gift, ideally I’d like to stay in a similar price range and avoid significantly increasing cost unless there’s a clear benefit.
(2) What equipment, if any, do you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?
I and currently shoot with a Canon 2000D (Rebel T7), which has been great for learning photography basics. I am still somewhat a beginner who has taken a couple classes. I received the G7X Mark III (currently on back order) as a gift. I love how it captures photos and want a more portable camera. However, I’m wondering if something newer like the Canon PowerShot V1 might better suit my needs, especially for video.
(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?
Travel photography, street photography, everyday lifestyle photos, beach photos, selfies, vlogging/content creation, etc. I plan to study abroad in Spain next year, so portability and ease of use are important to me.
(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?
Both. Photography is very important to me, and I’d also like high-quality video for vlogging and content creation.
Additional details:
I value having a built-in flash for photography, which is something that makes me hesitant about cameras like the PowerShot V1 since adding an external flash increases bulk and cost. I’ve heard people say the G7X is “overhyped,” and I’m worried it might be more of a beginner or influencer camera rather than something I can grow with. I want great photos with flash and strong video performance.
Is the G7x right for me or should I look into something else?
