I recently read about how much of what we wear actually started out as military gear. It’s funny how you can accidentally put together a full "soldier’s" outfit just by grabbing what’s in your closet, which is exactly what happened to me yesterday.

I wore a bomber jacket which was developed by the military to help pilots withstand the cold from high altitutudes when airplanes still did not have proper insulation.I also had on chinos, which originally started with the British Army back in the day.

But the coolest piece is this overshirt my wife got me. It’s from a Japanese brand called Big John, among the legends that started the whole Japanese denim scene.

This specific shirt is based on what US Navy Chief Petty Officers wore in the 1930s. What’s really interesting is that while the original Navy shirts were scratchy wool, Big John made this one out of a super heavy, brushed cotton to make it softer while remaining durable. They even kept the period-correct details, like the anchor engravings on the buttons. It’s a nice mix of military history and a great gift from my wife to remember our Osaka vacation.
