BC Ferries standby - is there a way to leave the queue

Sorry, dumb question. It’s been A WHILE since I took a ferry to the islands. I remember there being massive queues for cars trying to get on on standby and it getting so jam packed. So, is there a way to leave if you feel like the wait is too long?
