Could someone explain why the sentence “The bank is closed” is “El banco está cerrado” instead of “El banco es cerrado” ?

I’m trying to get to A2 level of Spanish, but little things like this majorly trip me up!

Is it because it’s a place so I need to use Esta? Does it have anything to do with gender specific nouns?

Am I taking the word “is” too literally?

Thanks!
