I got GV to ring a dumbphone (and send out calls as GV from my dumbphone) 2025

General Help / Support Question

I'm in a weird situation where I want to have two devices during work hours, one of which is a tablet and the other a dumbphone (prepaid cell service is getting super cheap). I've been using GV since the earliest days and really don't want to switch away from it as I love the flexibility of having it on multiple devices and other features.

I just did a test of whether I could just get phone calls on my flip phone, and succeeded- by swappiing a working SIM from another phone that works with GV into my flip phone.

I currently have an Android smartphone with Google Voice set up to ring that number (texts are only availabe through the GV android app)

I put the Android smartphone's SIM card into a "modern" Nokia flip phone and it proceeded to call and receive calls as the GV number, rather than whatever number is assigned to the SIM card by my cell service.

I can't get texts without the GV android app but for my weird 2-device situation, I can forward texts to email and at least receive them on the flip phone's email app. It's not a good solution for most people but it works for my purposes. In theory this would alert me that there is a text while i'm at work, and if I wanted to deal with it I'd go text back on my theoretical cell-connected tablet (or another smartphone - I haven't bought the tablet yet but want to go this route for various reasons), or a laptop if I'm near the laptop.
