This scene introduces "poor" Fredo as weak and struggling and signals that these traits will define his character. But Vito's body language is even more compelling. He is a tortured bystander unable to help his son, and he seems extremely uncomfortable in this role. His body language though subtle transmits an unmistakable resolve to do whatever it takes to take proper care of his family, materially and otherwise, so he would never feel such helplessness ever again. His silent resolve cries out (much like Scarlett O'Hara), "As God is my witness, I never want to be in this position again." At least, that is my takeaway from this scene. What is yours?
