Difference between WOW classic MOP and WOW classic?

Never played wow before, i started retail and was not enjoying it so i decided i should try WOW classic. As a new player am i playing Mists of pandaria or normal classic? is there a benefit to play one over the other? is there a higher player base on one? or are they merged?
