Moral Dilemma about a Christmas gift. What would you do? Help!
Here is the needed information. The question: keep the gift and say nothing? Say something? Or something else?
My boyfriend bought me a fairly expensive vase ($60). Company accidentally sent 4. Company is supposedly ethical, and a large company with hundreds of millions in revenue per year.
I get some morality-based OCD with stuff like this, but logically I know I’m not doing anything wrong, so no reassurance needed there. On one hand, it wasn’t my purchase. But I’d be using the vases happily. When I opened them, I was very clearly giddy and excited at such a stroke of luck! It was later on that I started feeling like maybe saying something is “the right thing to do”.
My boyfriend said he would prefer to keep them. He told me he felt insulted, like I was trying to get rid of the gift (he was hopeful that I would be excited), when I suggested we donate 2 of them. It feels kind of silly to keep 4 of them, although we would certainly use them. PS: He knows feeling insulted was a kneejerk reaction, he can get upset when he feels that he did something wrong because he wants everyone to be happy. Don’t worry, I told him I’m grateful and excited, but also feeling complicated feelings.
What would you do?
