Long story short but probably still long. Daughter 13 spent 8 days with a fever before being admitted. Was misdiagnosed with the flu. When bright back on day 8 the ran labs and did a chest xray which was clear but the lab came back with elevated numbers for d dimer and other issues that made the doctor think it was infection somewhere.
The only symptom present was fever and slight cough. So now admitted and they’re going slow running lanes and basically saying it’s probably Epstein bar aka mono and starting antibiotics would mess up other tests the finally draw blood cultures on day 10. Those take 24-48 hours to read and one comes back with bacteria but doctor says they think it’s still mono and probably just contaminate so let us draw more and grow more.. day 12 when those come in.. meanwhile I’m told still probably mono. At this point she experiences some discomfort and they examine her and give Tylenol for pain. I thought ok probably gas. Same thing on day 13. Finally a doctor comes in and says the other cultures are growing something and it’s pointing to maybe endocarditis so they draw more and say if this starts to grow it is confirmed and we’ll get transferred and start antibiotics. So this whole time no antibiotics…. Anyway. Culture grows doc says endocarditis let’s do a ct scan. Confirms she’s for enlarged appendix and two blood clots. Even then it took couple hours to start antibiotics and then transferred to a children’s hospital. 14 days finally antibiotics…. Why did they drag their feet?! Seems like the blood clots could have been avoided right ?! And turns out she does NOT have endocarditis— she has a ruptured appendix- sepsis- clots- fluid in a lung- kidney injury!!

So I guess I’m looking for similar experiences and to know what to expect now that she’s being treated! She’s for the drain in. Antibiotics and a plan for blood thinners tomorrow. Is there long term side effects to prepare for?!
