The Unclouded Soul Episode Discussion - Episodes 1 - 8
Welcome to the episodic discussion of The Unclouded Soul!!! Another day, another Hou Minghao drama, or two. Us Neophytes are certainly eating well this month. And as if that’s not enough of a belated Christmas present, IQIYI has also gifted us with an insane extremely generous release schedule. So let’s dive right into to it shall we?
The Premise
Since the beginning of time, legends have told of a Yulin (“Jade Wine”) Spring located within a Celestial Mountain that floats between the sky and the seas. Humans who drink from it can attain immortality while demons can advance their cultivation by a thousand years. In order to find the Celestial Mountain, those who seek immortality will need the guidance of the Kunlun Mirror.
In the Kingdom of Tiangsheng,
the Dream Shard Celestial appears in the emperor’s dreams and warn him not to let Hong Ye, the demon lord, find the Yulin Spring first. The pretty deity then turns into Hong Ye, jolting the emperor awake and scares him enough that he kills the head of his Fei Yu Guard in a fit of anger. The poor man’s transgression? Failing to protect his majesty from a nightmare? I guess it’s because he allowed evil spirts to invade the emperor’s chamber. It must be nice to be king.
The emperor plucks Bing Zhu’s dog tag random from a tray. So now Bing Zhu is the new head of the Feiyu Guard and the emperor’s Demon Slayer.
While having dinner one night, Bing Zhu espies a female demon hunter chasing what appears to be a bear demon. When the bear demon escapes, the young woman starts selling protection wards to the nearby villages so they can sleep without fear of being eaten by the bear demon. Bing Zhu, who turns out to be very competent even thought he only landed his job by the luck of the draw, sees through the young woman’s ruse right away and arrests her. The young woman, of course, turns out to be our FL Xiao Yao, who only pretends to be a demon hunter to earn a few bucks. The bear demon was her dad in a furry costume.
“50/50 split? 40/60?” I am digging this pair already. Oh, wait…
But Xiao Yao is not just your everyday, run-of-the-mill crook. She’s is a crook with special scented blood that attracts demons, pests, and the like. So Bing Zhu, ever the opportunist, takes her into the forest to try to nab a big demon. He does manage to find and fight a hydra a muti-headed snake demon. Xiao Yao finds a glowing gemstone and confronts a feline demon with split personalities. And in the ensuing melee, Xiao Yao falls off a cliff and is saved when the glowing gemstone turns into Hong Ye, the Monarch of Demons.
In the Demon Valley,
Xiao Mu/Xiao Ming the feline demon has been watching over a bunch of junior demons and patiently waiting for the return of his demon lord. And that is where Hong Ye takes Xiao Yao, because she has now been tainted with demon aura so she needs to learn some spells to protect herself. It is most definitely not because she looks like Ning’An, the woman he tried to marry 100 years ago and who ended up stabbing him in the chest on his wedding day…
And what follows is probably one of my least favorite parts of any xianxia drama - [FL or ML] goes to magic school. As Xiao Yao the budding demon learns her ropes, we are treated to a montage of Xiao Yao doing all the things a slacker/bad student would do - cutting off her instructor’s mustache to make soup, gambling with her fellow students and disposessing them of their worldly goods. During this section, I felt like Xiao Yao suddenly dropped like about 10 years in age - as she went from an intrepid con-artist we see in Episode 1 to a ten-year-old leading a bunch of other ten-year-olds into trouble.
This is also where the writers start to consult their classic xianxia trope handbook and check things off one by one. First up, the matchmaker’s red thread binding our FL and ML together that requires Xiao Yao and Hong Ye to experience the following three stages together:
- They can’t be more than 10 feet away from each other - Xiao Yao had to go to Hong Ye’s cleansing ceremony with him. But don’t worry, no garments were removed during this exercise.
- They share the same feelings and sensations - Hong Ye catches Xiao Yao in a bubble when she falls off a cliff, leading to a romantic moment.
- They have to perform dual cultivation. Except in this instance, “dual cultivation” is simply mastering the same spell together. Is this the writers toying with us?
Either way, this subplot began and ended so quickly that I really don’t understand why the writers saw fit to include it in the first place. The thread also wasn’t all that difficult to remove.
The Feiyu Guard invades the Demon Valley
To prove their mettle, the kids are sent into the human world to scare some human children and to retrieve some pillows.
Surprisingly, NOT, Luo Luo gets captured and Xiao Yao had to come to his rescue. Also not surprisingly, Bing Zhu and his Feiyu Guards are lying in wait armed with fluoride powder. When Xiao Yao inadvertently steps in the power and tracks it back to the Demon Valley with her, Bing Zhu was able to follow her back to the Demon Valley and takes over the demon’s stronghold. Bing Zhu and Hong Ye meets face-to-face for the first time. And Xiao Yao openly displays her support for the demons/Hong Ye by stepping between Hong Ye and Bing Zhu’s sword.
Bing Zhu sounds a little upset that Xiao Yao is siding with the demons and that she’s not going back to the human world with him. Funny. I don’t get the sense that they know each other well enough for Bing Zhu to have any feelings about her choices one way or another.
In either case, Hong Ye is able to escape to a nearby cave with Xiao Yao. But when one of the demons questions Xiao Yao’s loyalty and accuses her of being a mole, Xiao Mu/Xiao Ming suggests that Xiao Yao proves her loyalty by retrieving Bing Zhu’s sword. And Xiao Yao agrees.
Oh, and what’s happening here clearly has something to do with Hei Wu. I wonder if he is in cahoots with one of the Feiyu Guards.
The Mystery of the Water Ghost
So off to the human world Xiao Yao, Luo Luo, and Da Li (sigh) go. While there, Xiao Yao summons Hong Ye for a date and Luo Luo befriends a prosti…woman of the trade.
But when Luo Luo’s friend goes missing, they followed her trail and finds the bodies of 6 young women in a lake. All of these women have had their blood drained out of them and a soul-binding spell placed upon them.
In Xiao Yao’s struggle to get away, she uses up all her breadth (of course) and uses her jade pendant to call for Hong Ye. And when he arrives, you guessed it!, he uses c-drama trope #45 to ensure that Xiao Yao stays alive.
But then Bing Zhu arrives on the scene and jumps into the late. So Hong Ye skedaddles out of there and when Xiao Yao wakes up, she is disappointed not to find Hong Ye and thinks perhaps that she had imagined the entire thing, or perhaps that Bing Zhu is the one who gave her mouth-to-mouth. Ever the straight shooter, she even asks Bing Zhu about it and was relieved to find that it didn’t happen.
Anyways, back to the mystery. It turns out that aside from the 6 women found in the lake, Yunyin Jin, the daughter of the leader of the Qionghua sect is also missing. Since the soul-biding spell is an ancient art, who should they suspect but Hong Ye despite Xiao Yao’s assertion that Hong Ye can’t possibly have anything to do with it. To help them find the killer and to exonerate Hong Ye, Xiao Yao offers to use herself as bait to lure the killer out.
Mystery of the Misty Forest
To lure the killer out, Xiao Yao parades herself in the city streets and is lured by a mysterious mist onto a boat and into a forest where c-drama xianxia trope #245 rears its head - illusions that reflect your deepest desires. In this case, she sees Hong Ye, who professes his love for her but then says that she needs to become a full demon and starts eating people. That’s when shen realizes that he’s not the real Hong Ye and runs away. She uses her jade pendant to summon the real Hong Ye.
But when the Real Hong Ye arrives, who should he see but Ning‘an. But when the illusory Ning’an tries to kill him like the real Ning’an did a hundred years ago, he is able to shatter the illusion. Hum…Is this an indication that he is finally able to let go of his painful past?
Elsewhere, Bing Zhu has followed Xiao Yao into the forest and who should he see but his sister’s last moments on earth strapped to the locust tree that claimed her life.
All notable parties are able to leave the forest safe and sound. Hong Ye and Bing Zhu have another showdown on the boat. But when Tan’er refuses to let the Bing Zhu’s saber leave its scabbard, Bing Zhu decides to let Hong Ye go. Has a seed of doubt about Hong Ye’s character finally start to penetrate Bing Zhu’s prejudice-addled brain?
Oh, and before Xiao Yao and Hong Ye left the forest, they see a masked man with Yunyi, who is alive and well. Furthermore, she seems to be with the masked man of her own accord.
Also, Xiao Yao and Hong Ye have a lover’s spat on the boat. She is upset that he only sees her as a replacement for Ning’an. She says that she regrets waking him up, and, hurt by her words, Hong Ye takes back the jade pendant and leaves.
Sins and Redemption
Upon returning to the city, Xiao Yao finds the Qionghua sect clamoring for Luo Luo and Da Li’s blood. To gain their freedom, Xiao Yao goes in search of the masked man and Yunyin in the misty forest again and learns of the mask man’s story.
Twenty years ago, warriors from the Hefeng tribe goes into search of the Yulin Spring and manages to find it. On their way back, a storm sends them to the Kingdom of Tiansheng, where they are ambushed by all the major sects also coveting the Yulin Spring. Everyone died except Ah Li, who swallows a lump of mud infused the Yulin Spring water. He then kills 1000 people over the next ten years in the name of vengeance, until he starts living in an abandoned temple and meets a woman who would come into the temple and offer foods to the gods. Once the woman becomes aware of his presence, she would leave the food for the gods as well as change of clothing for him. Thus he was able to live off of her bounty and, warmed by her caring of him, resolve to change his ways and spend the rest of his life saving people instead of killing them.
And who should the woman be but Yunyi’s mother Mrs. Jin!
And that is why when Ah Li meets YunyI, he decides to take her back to his lodgings in the forest so he can cure her eyes and give her eyesight back to her.
Hum…what kind of naivete allows a girl to leave with a man she just met without telling her parents?
Yunyi tells Xiao Yao that she wishes to stay with Ah Li until her eyes are cured. But when Xiao Yao goes back to tell her parents of Yunyi’s wishes, Jin Muqing refuses to believe her. And that is because…
Jin Muqing is the one who has been killing the young women!
Years ago, Jin Muqing lost control of his cultivation and becomes someone who needs to drink virgin blood in order to survive. Mrs. Jin has been hiding this secret all along and that is why she is constantly going into temples and praying and offering food to the gods to try to atone for her husband’s sins.
Um..I’m sorry lady. But if you are allowing him to go on killing, you are as guilty as he is and no amount of praying will absolve you. Just saying.
Either way, when Xiao Yao sees a drop of blood on Mrs. Jin’s neck, she starts to get an inkling of what’s going on. To draw out the real killer, she offers to take Mrs. Jin, Jin Muqing, and all the Qionghua disciples into the misty forest. While in the forest, Jin Muqing loses control after seeing his past victims. And that’s when his disciples and the Feiyu Guard realizes the truth. Seeing no way out of their dilemma, Mrs. Jin kills her husband and then commits suicide.
Hum…I am having a hard time eliciting much sympathy for Mrs. Jin. Her hiding her husband’s actions while lecturing Ah Li about atoning for his sins seems the height of hypocrisy to me. But when Ah Li shows up and is stabbed by two of the Feiyu Guards, my heart broke for him.
I loved that Bing Zhu bowed to the newly departed in a show of respect. Have we seen a turning point in his characterization?
Hong Ye said it best when he said: “A person who spends the last ten years saving people is despised by all. But a person who kills people is revered by all. Such is the way of the human world.”
So, what happens next?
After Xiao Yao returns to the Demon Valley, Xiao Yao and Hong Ye discover a fragment of the Kunlun mirror called “Lasting Resentment”. Hong Ye says that the Kunlun mirror are formed from emotional attachments. Since there are 8 great suffering in live, does that mean we have 7 more mysteries to look forward to and that they are going to represent each of the following?
Birth, Aging, Sickness, Death, Separate from Beloved, Unfulfilled Desires, and Inability to let go.
A Funny Moment
A Romantic Moment
And of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention Xiao Yao and Hong Ye’s drinking binge on top of the roof. Since Xiao Yao is most definitely the reincarnation of Ning‘an, how will her past life come into play after much ado has been made about how she is her own person?
These two are cute as buttons.
So what do you all think?
Honestly, with the participation of the director of The Knockout, I was expecting something a little more original and less tropey. I don’t love the time spent in the Demon Valley, and Xiao Yao’s characterization is a bit inconsistent. One minute she’s an intrepid con-artist, another minute she has reverted to a naive teenager. I hope I don’t get to see too much of the minor demons in upcoming episodes because I find the bunch insufferable.
The pacing is also a bit off. They haven’t really shown the progression of Xiao Yao and Hong Ye’s relationship all that well so it’s hard for me to get invested. Hou Minghao hasn’t been given all that much to do and if you have never seen a c-drama before, you might even mistake Wang Duo for the ML. He’s been given more screen time (it feels like) and the meatier character arc.
Anyways, because of the aggressive airing schedule, this post is more of a straight recap than my usual style. With them releasing 3 episodes daily, I may make adjustments to how I do these discussion posts later but we will just have to wait and see…
In the meantime, thanks for reading and please sound off in the comments below.
