Plant seeds

Has anyone grown aquarium plants from seed? I was given a 3 pack of aquarium seeds as a Christmas gift. According to the labels they are long hair grass, tiny leaf grass and short hair grass. What substrate is best to start these with? Some will be going into a frog tank but I plan to use mesh to help keep the grass together.
