I’m a pretty recent collector, so could be wrong, but this is what I think is going on and why you see volatility especially over the weekend/holidays:

1. Due to some market conditions (weakening dollar, new industrial uses for silver, possible existing undervaluation) Silver price has been going up very quickly lately

2. Bullion sellers often run through their supply of physical silver. If they do this and keep selling, then they’ll need to buy more silver to ship to their buyer. Normally, their fee will cover small fluctuations so they’ll still make money, but if silver is going up *fast* like now, there’s a chance they could actually lose money if they have to buy silver they’ve already sold at a higher price than they sold it for.

3. This is an especially big risk over the weekends or holidays when they may sell silver on Saturday, then wait to Monday to buy excess physical silver to fill orders. And, with demand as high as it is, they are almost certainly selling more than they have. *SO* to ensure they don’t lose money, dealers push their price up to something crazy, so they know they won’t lose money on it.

This leads to everyone thinking the price of silver is $85 or something, but it’s actually intentionally over priced over the weekend because bullion buyers are hedging their bets. Then, it “crashes” on Monday because the suppliers are actually able to get their silver at a more reasonable price so lower the price down again.

TLDR: weekends are volatile, and Monday corrections are often likely on huge weekend runs.
