Need advice: using my broken Dell Inspiron 15 7579 as a desktop CPU

General question

Hi everyone,

My Dell Inspiron 15 7579 2-in-1 has a broken hinge and screen. I want to use it with a tv, wireless keyboard, and mouse. Basically a multimedia setup for streaming and studying. Can I safely do this, and is there anything I should watch out for?

Here are my exact specs:

  • Model: Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7579)
  • CPU: 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7500U Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.5 GHz, 2 cores / 4 threads)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 2400MHz (16GBx1)
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 620 (shared memory)
  • Display: 15.6-inch FHD (1920x1080) IPS Touch Display with IR Camera
  • OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

I’ve read about connecting an external monitor and setting the laptop to “do nothing” when the lid is closed, but I’m wondering if anyone has experience with this model specifically and can share tips, like disassembly, cooling, or port setup.

Also should i use Linux for my said purposes, hoping it would be faster. It wont support windows 11 and windows 10 wont get updates.

Thanks in advance!
