Anyone tried the "thumb tack method"?

During a moment of my brilliance (bakedness) I had the epiphany to use a thumb tack to poke holes in my herb after I had packed it. In my mind, this creates small channels for the vapor to travel while also increasing surface area. This is mainly for those like myself who vape solid flower, but if you like a tight bowl of ground material this could also work for you.
