I'm drowning in what is a puddle for most people and I don't see a way out. I'm so tired.
Throwaway for identity safety reasons.
I'm in what is barely ANY debt for most people, but is insurmountable for me and I don't know what to do about it.
My income is about 1,200 USD monthly. I'm disabled (spinal deformity I was born with) and get money through SSI. Any money I make through any other source is basically negated instantly because they lessen my next month's payment by however much I made. So, if I make 200 from working or anything, I only get 1000 for the next month. As you can imagine, most of this income is eaten immediately by rent.
I have about 3k in debt on credit cards due to medical and dental issues that insurance didn't cover. I still have a LOT of work that needs to be done, but I can't afford it so I've been just...not getting it done. The monthly payments on these cards has overdrafted my bank account multiple times, which adds on a 40 dollar fee for every overdraft even if it's only over by a dollar. The past month I had so much in overdraft fees that when my payment finally hit, it was instantly down to 800 because of the overdraft fees. I've called the bank and gone in person and everything and told them to remove the overdraft protection, which they said was an option, and they keep saying they did but then shrugging at me when it overdrafts again and refusing to return the money or reverse the charges.
I'm considering just closing my bank account entirely, opening one at a different bank and having my payments deposited there, since the credit card payments and stuff are set up to autopay from the original bank, and paying my rent out of that one - but I don't know what to do about the credit card payments and all that I just can't make anymore. If I file as bankrupt, which apparently you have to pay to do, chances are the one thing I have of any value - my car - will be taken, and that'll stop me being able to access medical care, get food, or what little work I can find. I've been applying for basically every job I can, but because of the way things are set up, it's not even worth it to work and I'd lose money by working unless I was earning enough to not need the financial aid anymore, and I have yet to find any job that fits that description. I've been volunteering at a museum that loves having me there and they've said they'd love to actually hire me, but they just don't have the budget for it, so I'm basically 'working' there at my own expense just to have SOMETHING to put on my resume` and not have a giant gap and to try and build some business connections.
I have no safety net and no one I can ask for help. I have no family - I aged out of foster - and I have nothing of value (besides my car, which is worth less than 3k) that I could sell to mitigate anything. I don't know what to do and at this point I'm just exhausted. Every time I've talked to someone about the fees or anything, they say it'll get handled, and then it doesn't and there's nothing I can do about it. I can't afford a lawyer. I can't afford legal aid. I can't even afford a soda most days. The debt I have is basically NOTHING to so many people, and yet for me, it's an obstacle I have no realistic way of overcoming. My health is in the crapper and getting worse every day because I can't afford to deal with it or to eat healthy or anything, I can't work most jobs and the ones I can either aren't hiring, I don't qualify for or just don't pay anywhere near enough. I'm drowning in what, for most people, is a puddle, and I'm just...so tired. I'm so tired of listening to other people laughing about losing a few thousand at the casino when that would be literally life-changing money for me. I'm tired of not being able to do anything about my own situation - so many people keep saying things like "Just go to school! Just do this! Just don't worry!" and I physically, financially, CAN'T.
