What was your “ Oh Sh**” Moment?
I have a long travel day so I’d love to read some stories.
I’ll give one of mine,

Just a regular day on the piers, Our boat was in said yards for years and we just got out a month or so prior to this incident. Which is crazy to think we could’ve been right next to said boat.
Standing Topside & out of nowhere there’s the radio call of an active shooter. POOD calls me over and relays the message. We initially thought it was a drill until you saw the same responding force that followed OJ down the freeway start to respond.
As bubbleheads, you’d never think you’d have to shoot besides Quals or Shark watch, but it came across my brain that this is real & anything could happen. It got real once the NAV chief came to the ladder & said, hatch is being shut, and it’s up to just me & POOD.
Now granted, the shooting was in shipyard & we were piered next to the fitness center but at the time we had no idea what was going on.
Laying prone next to the sail outboard for an hour waiting for any update was my “ oh shit, this is real “ moment.
Come to find out, It was a A-Ganger who just had his XOI & was recommended for Mast.
For some odd reason, they decided to let him go on watch right after the XOI & he went on to have a breakdown & shoot 3 people & then himself.
NCIS was all over the Paquet at night as well. I remember getting off duty & seeing 3 Black Suburbans parked outside.
Crazy day. But, lessons learned was don’t put sailors on duty with a gun after you discipline them. Makes logical sense. As they say, rules & regulations usually are written in Blood.
RIP to the sailor who struggled deeply with mental health clearly
& RIP to the 2 shipyard workers who lost their lives that day.
