I just watched the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen and I have come to the conclusion that out of all of the female cast the one who had the potential to be the most interesting was Mai
I know from general cultural osmosis that JJK does not really handle its female characters that well in later parts of its story. In the first season though, I thought the female characters were perfectly fine although I wish they had more interactions with one another. Out of all the female characters, the one that interested me the most was Mai.
I don't know why, maybe I just gravitate towards toxic cringefail women but I found her personality much more interesting than Maki. Their dynamic together with their childhoods and the zenin clan was also quite compelling. Add in the fact that she is definitely implied to be a lesbian and her bizarrely homoerotic interactions with Nobara and you can see why I was interested (I think Nobamai could be some truly excellent toxic yuri). I think if the series explored more of her childhood trauma and developed her more she could have been one of the most interesting and compelling characters. I also think that some more interactions between her, Maki, and Nobara would have been very good.
