Hardwood floor question

I have hardwood flooring in an old house that is connected directly to the floor joists, no under lament. The existing floor has had a number of pieces replaced over the years and looks like a patchwork right now. The wife wants new hardwood but doesn’t want the old floor removed. Can I put luan over the existing floor and nail the new hardwood on top? I’m open to suggestions.
