My friend keeps making me seem like an evil person for "talking about my patients"...

Rant

Started off on the ambulance and now in-hospital in the ED.

In all my years of doing this, Ive probably told my friend a handful of on-the-job stories. Mostly just about the frequent fliers, the patient that called 911 and gets mad when we arrive and try to treat him, funny patient interactions, and stuff like that. I've got plenty of heartwarming stories also, but nobody ever wants to listen to that. And 100% of the time, people ask to hear the "bad" stories. I personally also think my bedside manner is exceptional. Just based off the feedback I get from majority of my patients, and I am pretty adept at interacting with people in crisis.

The other day, I was talking to my friend about the topic of working in Healthcare (she doesn't and never has worked in healthcare at all) and I was telling her of the providers and nurses I worked with that were so rude to just about all of their patients for no reason... then she throws out, "Don't YOU talk shit about your patients like that?"

To which I told her "I don't talk shit about all of my patients... Just frequent fliers and abusive ones". She proceeded to say, "Well its your job, and they're all patients. You shouldn't be in that field if you can't control your emotions". And I was like "WHAAAT?!?!"

I tried to tell her that it's not unusual to vent about a stressful patient, and the vast majority of healthcare workers deal with abuse often. We all talk about good, bad, and sad cases... its normal. Those are the ones we talk and vent about, not grandpa having a heart attack. And she said "well if you have to vent after every patient, then you should be in a different field". I immediately left... and probably am going to cut my friend off. BUT I can't stop hearing her words in my head making it seem like i'm just a nasty person/provider who doesn't deserve to be in this field because I vented about a patient that spat on me...

Idk where this narrative of hers is coming from. It's like she's putting in so much effort to make me look bad even though that's not the reality of it at all. I love my patients, and i have a lot of patience. And I feel like i'm really good at my job. I always encourage my patients to tell me about what they're going through, and they'll apologize for rambling and I'll tell them that its not their best day and that its okay to talk about something that they're not happy about.

Has anybody else gone through something like this? It's giving such weird energy since its coming from someone i've known since middle school.
