Maybe pants-off isn't for everyone?

This is just a general topic of discussion-- not looking for advice. I just want to put it out there that maybe this whole "3 day" or "Oh Crap" or "pantless" stuff just may not be as universal as it is being offered to be. I think right now it's such a big trend that it can be easy to see it as "the way that people do it now." I know I did. For example, in the Ms. Rachel potty training book, that's what she recommends doing. First you go pantless, prompt constantly, praise a lot, and move on to loose shorts and eventually underwear when they get better at the whole thing.

I'd like to offer, for parents who don't think this is working for their kid, that maybe it really is just the wrong method for them. It is not right for every kid and it seems like people sometimes present it as if it's some kind of standard that should be for everyone.

In my daughter's case, she was pretty open to the potty and learning how to use it, but this method went terribly for us. We introduced the potty with no pressure and got her started using it in the morning at and night first. She read books and got really interested in the potty, so eventually we decided to try the pants-off method. She hated it. She didn't like being told what to do all the time, she didn't like all the pressure. The whole thing was too much for her. She was withholding poop too-- which we found very hard to deal with because the truth was we really didn't want our things to get pooped on. On the third day, she woke up and just cried at the potty. It was a total failure and really stressful for all involved.

We went back to pull ups and decided to just keep giving her chances to go to the potty. Then we tried evenings with underwear for a few hours. Then lengthened the amount of time in underwear. Eventually we introduced rewards for self-initiating and pooping in the potty. Now we're in a good spot. We still use pull-ups when we go outside and that's working just fine for us for now. We're still using rewards too. The whole thing has been fairly chill since we abandoned the all-or-nothing attitude.

How about other people? Does anyone else feel like the popularity of the pants-off methods is stressing people out unnecessarily? Did anyone else fail with this method and succeed another way? I'm interested in a conversation about this because I wish I had seen more discussion of this nature when I was just starting out with potty training
