FY2 knowledge gaps - advice needed

Educational

sorry for the essay but would really appreciate some advice on what to do.

Currently an FY2 just rotated onto GP in Dec and I often do not know what to do/ what advice to give in consultations . Part of it is seeing patients with problems I’ve never encountered before after being in hospital rotations/senior led specialities, other reasons can be not being confident in the knowledge I hold and struggling to give a plan and communicate that effectively.

in terms of knowledge, I feel like my medical knowledge hss just gone down the drain since medical school and I struggle to remember things as well as I used to. I will quickly look at Nice CKS or red whale knowledge if i know what the problem is before a consultation but sometimes I don’t have the time to do that. i do know the basic management of some things but often I don’t know the details and know I’m not giving the best medical advice and so worry I am telling them the wrong things. Often I know x but don’t know y and z, especially when it comes to pharmacological treatment.

I have a supervising GP who I can discuss cases with and this helps but I think the underlying issue is not a matter of the GP rotation but more issues with my clinical confidence, competence, experience and knowledge. I thought GP long lunch breaks would’ve have given me enough time to revise and go over cases to just refresh my knowledge but I often overrun or am completing admin tasks that by the time I’ve actually had a break, I have my next clinic. then by the time I get home, have dinner, I’m so tired that I have no energy to revise and learn (I’m also not sitting any exams this year). It’s a never ending cycle and I know that I will benefit from reading up on cases or revising common GP conditions but I just can’t get myself to do it and this leaves me feeling even more depleted of knowledge…

I would appreciate any advice on what to do!! How can I improve my knowledge, what resources to use to revise or refresh knowledge, methods or techniques to learn content quickly (especially after long day of work), how to get my drive for learning back, become better at what I do.

thank you!

P.S my respect for GPs has sky rocketed their knowledge is so broad and they deal with so much I can’t believe people think GP is easy

P.P.S. I think I peaked in med school lol I dont know how I revised for hours on end and I probably know less now than I ever did
