Rey Rivera was a 32 year old writer and aspiring filmmaker who moved to Baltimore with his wife, Allison, to work for his longtime friend Porter Stansberry at Stansberry & Associates. On May 16, 2006, Rey abruptly left his home after receiving a phone call traced to his workplace. He never returned.

Six days later, Rey’s car was found parked near the Belvedere Hotel. On May 24, his body was discovered inside a conference room after crashing through a hole in a lower roof of the hotel. He had extensive injuries consistent with a fall from a great height. However, investigators could not conclusively determine where he fell from, and several physical details, such as an undamaged phone and glasses near the hole, the distance from plausible jump points, and missing personal items, raised doubts about suicide.

Police ultimately ruled his death a suicide, but the medical examiner classified it as undetermined, citing inconsistencies in the injuries. Rey’s family strongly disputes suicide, noting he was happy, making future plans, and not showing signs of suicidal intent. A cryptic note found in his home was deemed unusual but not a suicide note by the FBI.

Suspicion has centered on Rey’s work environment: the mysterious phone call from Stansberry & Associates, a reported gag order preventing employees from speaking to police, Porter Stansberry’s refusal to cooperate, and the company’s prior involvement in SEC fraud charges. Other theories include murder tied to financial losses, accidental death, or suicide influenced by mental health issues (the FBI later suggested possible bipolar disorder).

The case gained renewed attention through Netflix’s *Unsolved Mysteries* (2020). Despite multiple theories including a possible reenactment of a movie scene, no definitive explanation has been proven. Rey Rivera’s death remains unsolved, with the medical examiner’s investigation still officially open.
