The Fastest Way to Lose Your Attention: Why Meditation Works Better Than You Think

Sharing / Insight đź’ˇ

I spent a decade building apps. I know exactly how they hijack attention through dopamine loops, variable rewards, and constant novelty.

But here's what I learned after burning out and turning to meditation:

The phone doesn't steal your attention. Your mind is already fragmented. The phone just exposes it.

Most meditation practices fail because we think the goal is to "control" attention—to force focus. That's willpower. And willpower fails against designed systems.

But here's what actually works:

Real meditation isn't about controlling the mind. It's about seeing how the mind naturally works. When you sit with your own mind (without the phone hijacking it), something unexpected happens—you realize most of the pull isn't external. It's internal hunger being exploited.

You're not chasing the phone. You're chasing something the phone pretends to offer: peace, connection, completion.

Once you see that directly (through practice), the mechanical pull dissolves. Not because you have more willpower. But because you understand what you're actually hungry for.

This is why Buddhist practices have always recognized this—they worked on the interior first, making external distractions less tempting.

Curious if anyone here has noticed the same thing—that sitting meditation changed how you relate to the phone, not because of discipline but because you saw something.
