3.5 YOE, stuck in QA/support loop, night shifts, micromanagement | Feeling burnt out and unsure about next move
Posting here to get some unbiased advice and maybe vent a bit.
I’m a Software Engineer with ~3.5 YOE in a fintech setup. Although my title says SE, my actual work has gradually turned into QA/support/manual operations. The current project has been running completely manually for over a year, with no automation, and management is unwilling to change that.
What’s draining me is extreme micromanagement. I often have to stay on calls late into the night (sometimes till 4-5 AM IST) with screen sharing on, where even small steps are double-checked. Weekends also get pulled in because it’s “production”. The work itself is easy, but the constant monitoring and odd hours are exhausting.
I was earlier given hope of transitioning into a development role, but that never materialised. I’ve asked for challenging or dev-oriented work multiple times, but due to layoffs, internal politics, and “business needs”, nothing has changed.
Because of rotating shifts (day/evening/night/weekends), I’ve completely lost consistency, can’t maintain a learning routine, workouts, or even plan properly. Over time, this has started affecting my mental health and confidence.
Right now, I feel stuck at a crossroads:
- Staying longer risks burnout and irrelevance
- Quitting without an offer (long notice period) feels risky
Looking for advice on:
- Has anyone transitioned from QA/support-heavy roles into dev or better roles later?
- Is it better to quit first for mental clarity or push through while job hunting?
- How do you rebuild confidence when your current role adds little to your resume?
- Am I overthinking, or is this a sign to exit ASAP?
Would really appreciate perspectives from people who’ve been through something similar. DMs are welcome too.
Thanks
