Renter Lawsuit? Owners backed off lease.

Hello! We signed a lease with a property listed for rent to be move in ready by December 1st. After giving full deposit and 1st months rent we visited the property and nothing was done to be move in ready. House was still dirty, carpet was dirty, no repairs have been done and owners still had belongings in the property. After a back a fourth the owners said they’ll have it ready by January 1st (no rent required for January).

We reluctantly agreed. Me, my wife and daughter stayed in a hotel for all of December and sacrificed staying in the hotel for Christmas. The hotel was paid for a month stay with the company I work with. But since we were waiting, we wasted a whole month stay that was paid for.

Fast forward today the owners notified us that they don’t want to pay for repairs etc. And told us they want terminate the lease and refund the money(which we are still waiting for). My family is distraught, we wasted time and money in hopes the property will be ready & now we have to search for a home this new year.

Is this worthy of a lawsuit for emotional and financial damages?
