Why "Willpower" is a lie (and the actual science of why we get hungry)
We’ve been told for decades that weight loss is just about "wanting it enough." If you fail, it’s because you’re lazy, right?
Science says: Absolutely not.
I spent a lot of time looking into why some days I could eat a salad and feel fine, and other days I wanted to eat the entire pantry. It turns out, your brain is running a very old survival script.
Here’s the "human" breakdown of the science that helped me stop hating myself and start seeing progress:
- Meet Ghrelin (The Hunger Monster): This is a hormone your stomach produces when it’s empty. If you drop your calories too low, too fast, your body floods you with Ghrelin. It's not a lack of willpower; it’s your body's alarm system screaming for fuel.
- The "Paper Towel Effect": This is a mental model used in communities to explain why you don't see changes immediately. When a paper towel roll is full, removing one sheet (losing 1lb) doesn't change the size of the roll. But when the roll is thin, one sheet makes a huge difference. Trust the math even when the mirror isn't showing it yet.
- NEAT (The Hidden Burn): Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. This is just a fancy way of saying "moving around while living." Fidgeting, standing, and walking to the car burn more over 24 hours than a 30-minute intense workout does. This is why "10k steps" is actually a science-backed cheat code.
- CICO is the Foundation: At the end of the day, Calories In vs. Calories Out is the physical law of the universe. Whether you do Keto, Vegan, or Fasting, they only work if they create a deficit. Finding a way to do that while still eating food you enjoy is the only "secret" to sustainability.
The takeaway? Stop fighting your biology and start working with it. If you’re starving, your deficit is too high. If you're tired, your protein or steps are too low.
I’m curious what’s one "fact" about weight loss you used to believe that turned out to be totally wrong once you looked at the numbers?
